Saturday, I took the local bus to the Catedral ski area. This was the start of my 3 day hike. Initially the trail was relatively flat and then started climbing next to a creek. I came upon an old refugio built into the side of a rock. I reached Refugio Frey, rested and then decided to go on. The climb then involved scrambling up some very large rocks, negotiating a tricky steep rock slope and then a steep descent down a dusty slippery dirt and stone mountainside. Eventually I reached a nice campsite next to stream at the bottom of a valley.
I was later joined by Luick, a Frenchman. He told me that tonight was a full lunar eclipse. We watched the eclipse from 9 PM to 10 PM under a clear quiet sky.
