South America 2007 - Argentina Lake District

Photo: Glacier on Mt Tronador

After a night at the hostel, I took the Club Aldino van to Pampa Linda. I hiked up to Refugio Otto Meiling at 6,700 feet elevation situated next to the glaciers of Mt Tronador (thunderer). On the way up I would occasionally hear the roar of ice breaking off a glacier and falling to the valley below. Most people stayed in the refugio, but I and 4 US college students camped out. It was very windy and cold at night. Saw a condor flying over the glaciers.

A thick fog was present on Wednesday morning, but after hiking just 10 minutes down, I was clear of the clouds and it felt warmer. I got to Pampa Linda at 2:15 PM and took the 5 PM van back to Bariloche.
