South America 1992 - La Paz Area Treks

Although my knee was sore from the previous 2 days downhill hike, I decided to give the El Cumbre to Coroico hike a go. Within an hour I reached the pass at 4,800 meters. At the pass I met 4 men and 2 women Israelis who were also doing the hike. Due to altitude problems, one women was carried to the pass by a campesino. The trail was steeply downhill, but after a few miles became more gradual. We hiked until 5:30 PM.

The Israelis did not have instant food, and took a long time to cook a meal. They were big into holidays. Today was the Day of the Holocaust, and the ex-soldiers took some time to remember those that died under Hitler by moments of silence and singing.

May 1, 1992 We woke up late to a clear sky. I was very sore from the downhill hike, and my toes were scraped from jamming them in my shoes. I removed the insoles. On a sunny day, we saw many kilometers of Inca Trail. By 4:30 PM we reached Choro and bought eggs and noodles from one of the village people.

We then hiked up to the first campsite, a small space on the trail that hung over a cliff and had barely enough room for our 3 tents. I hoped that if I had to get up in the middle of the night, I would remember where I was, because it would be very easy to step out of the tent and over the precipice.
